About me
I have been developing software for more than 20 years, around nine of them with a focus on embedded systems. It all started with Linux. I was fascinated by understanding a system down to the last detail and being free to adapt it – right up to open-source software that I built myself and tuned to my system. That led me early on to C, the language of the Linux kernel. Its clarity, which allows even complex systems to be described precisely, shapes my work to this day. C++ and Java followed during my training and studies.
From the operating system to the hardware
Alongside Linux programming, I started working with microcontrollers early on, initially with 8-bit controllers from Atmel (now Microchip). At the same time I immersed myself in IT security. Assembly programming and reverse engineering with IDA Pro gave me a deep understanding of how programs, operating system and hardware interact – and how software can be protected effectively against unwanted access. I deepened this knowledge during my studies with a focus on Information Security & Embedded Systems. It flows into every project today.
Embedded development as my focus
What excites me most is the interface between software and electronics: tuning circuit and firmware to each other so that both work together efficiently. Turning an idea directly into a schematic, a PCB and firmware myself, without detours, is for me the core of good engineering. For eight years I was technically responsible for a distributed embedded platform of CAN-networked micro pumps for a manufacturer of heating systems, including the handover of the platform between two manufacturers.
Tools that speed up development
3D printing is a very powerful tool here – whether it is a mechanical project with servos and motors driving gearboxes, a fixture of frames and interlocking screw-together parts that supports a measurement, or a prototype for a hydraulic system. The latest developments in AI are accelerating today’s development processes enormously, reducing what used to take months to a few weeks. Creative ideas can thus be realised within weeks or even days.
